As we gear up to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, food, and festivities, it’s important to remember that these activities can be overwhelming for our pets. In fact, there is a reported 30% increase in lost or runaway pets around the 4th of July. Fireworks, loud noises, and large gatherings can cause severe stress, especially for pets with noise sensitivities.
Plan Ahead
Don’t wait until the last minute. Just For Pets Animal Hospital will be open on July 4th, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to support your pet care needs.
Create a Safe Space
If your pet has a known noise phobia, prepare a quiet, secure space indoors, away from doors and windows. Use a kennel or a quiet room and consider covering the kennel with a blanket for extra comfort. Tools like Thunder Shirts, pheromone diffusers, toys, and white noise can also help reduce anxiety.
ID and Microchipping
Ensure your pet has a collar with a clearly legible name tag. If your pet is not microchipped, now is a good time to do it. A microchip greatly increases the chances of being reunited if your pet runs away. Already have one? Make sure your contact information is current and accurate.
Consider Staying In
If you’re attending a fireworks display or a large gathering, it might be best to leave your pet at home in a safe and calm environment.
Know the Signs of Stress
Watch for behaviors such as panting, pacing, lip licking, hiding, destructive chewing, or excessive clinginess. If your pet has a history of extreme anxiety, talk to your veterinarian. Medications and calming therapies may be recommended.
Avoid Human Food
While it’s tempting to share holiday treats, many foods can cause digestive issues or pancreatitis in pets. Stick to pet-safe snacks and remind guests not to feed your furry friends.
